Atom
An atom is the smallest unit of matter that retains the chemical properties of an chemical element. Atoms are the fundamental building blocks of all substances and consist of a dense nucleus—containing protons and neutrons—surrounded by a cloud of electrons in orbital shells. The number of protons defines which element an atom is; electrons determine its chemical behavior.
Atoms are remarkably small (around 10⁻¹⁰ meters across), yet they're mostly empty space. The nucleus, despite being tiny, contains almost all an atom's mass. Electrons orbit at specific energy levels, and when atoms gain, lose, or share electrons with other atoms, they form chemical bonds, creating molecules and compounds.
The concept evolved dramatically over time. Ancient philosophers theorized atoms philosophically; Dalton proposed them scientifically in 1808; later, physicists like Rutherford and Bohr revealed their internal structure through experiments with particle accelerators and spectroscopy. Today, understanding atoms is essential across Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Medicine—from explaining why photons energize the chloroplast during photosynthesis to how genetic mutations occur.
