Biological systems

A biological system is any organized collection of related parts that work together as a unified whole to sustain life. These systems exist at every scale, from molecular machinery within cells to entire ecosystems spanning continents—each level operating according to principles of distribution, feedback, and adaptive change.

The concept bridges anatomical observation with mathematical structure. A heart circulates blood; a forest cycles nutrients; a fungal network trades resources with plant roots. Each system maintains itself through specialization and interdependence, converting energy (like solar radiation) into organized action while managing gradients and chemical potentials.

What makes them "systems" is interconnection: remove one part, and cascading effects ripple through the rest. This insight—that life is architecture, not inventory—transformed biology in the 20th century. Modern systems thinking applies computational logic and network analysis to understand how a thorax breathes, how weather systems evolve, or how a flowing organism responds to stress.

Biological systems are nature's algorithms, written in protein and gene rather than code.
