Brain computer interface

A brain computer interface (BCI) is a direct communication pathway between the brain and an external device, bypassing traditional neuromuscular pathways. BCIs detect electrical or metabolic signals from neural activity—typically via EEG, implanted electrodes, or functional imaging—and translate them into commands that control computers, prosthetics, or other machines.

BCIs range from non-invasive (scalp electrodes) to invasive (microelectrode arrays in cortex). Current applications span Clinical settings (helping paralyzed patients regain mobility), Neuroscience research, gaming, and experimental Cognitive overhead reduction. The field sits at the intersection of Molecular biology, neural signal processing, and Engineering.

Early BCIs achieved basic tasks—moving cursors, spelling letters. Modern systems trained with Machine learning models enable more sophisticated Decision-making. Major challenges include signal stability over time, the "bandwidth problem" (brain signals carry limited information), and ethical questions around Privacy, Cognitive overhead, and cognitive liberty.
