Building design

Designers synthesize multiple constraints: Thermal performance and energy efficiency, structural integrity under load, spatial patterns that guide movement, and sensory experience. They employ Modeling (mathematics) to predict how buildings will perform, from computational Simulations of airflow to AI-assisted tools that optimize material choices.
The field encompasses diverse scales and philosophies. Some practitioners focus on sustainability, minimizing environmental footprint through material selection and passive systems. Others prioritize cultural expression—how a building embodies community values or connects to its field of historical context. Parametric design, modular systems, and Computational simulations increasingly allow designers to explore vast possibility spaces before construction begins.
