Ceramics

Ceramics are objects and materials made by shaping clay or other inorganic compounds and hardening them through heat. This ancient craft sits at the intersection of material science, Design, and art, producing everything from functional vessels to sculptural forms.

The ceramic process begins with clay—a fine-grained mineral sediment that becomes plastic when wet. Artisans shape it by hand, on a wheel, or through molds, then allow it to dry. The crucial transformation occurs during firing: intense heat causes chemical bonds to reorganize, permanently hardening the material into stone-like strength. Higher temperatures create vitrification, where the surface becomes glass-like and non-porous.

Different clay bodies and firing temperatures produce vastly different results. Earthenware remains porous and warm-toned; Stoneware becomes denser and more durable; Porcelain achieves whiteness and translucence through specialized clay and extreme heat. Glazes—glass-like coatings applied before firing—add color, waterproofing, and decorative detail.

Ceramics have shaped human civilization for over 20,000 years, from ancient cooking vessels to modern tile and industrial components. Today, the craft balances tradition with experimentation, combining hand-building techniques with contemporary aesthetics.
