"Computational" describes anything involving algorithms, calculations, or systematic problem-solving using computers or mathematical methods. The term spans theoretical foundations, practical tools, and philosophical implications—wherever humans harness the power of formal reasoning to process information and model the world.
The word emerged as digital simulation and algorithmic thinking became central to science, engineering, and discovery. Today it's less a narrow technical term than a lens: a computational approach to neural networks, climate modeling, or even social dynamics means reducing complex systems to steps a machine (or mind) can execute.
This has proven transformative. Numerical methods let us predict planetary motion. Multimessenger astronomy coordinates telescopes worldwide through computational coordination. Plant breeding accelerates when germination patterns are modeled computationally. Agricultural systems optimize soil moisture and seasonal timing via data analysis.
Yet "computational" isn't neutral—it reflects choices about what can be quantified, simplified, or automated. Not all understanding is reductive, and not all exploration requires calculation.
