Constant (mathematics)

A constant is a fixed numerical or symbolic value that does not change within a given mathematical context or expression. Unlike variables, which can take on different values, constants remain invariant throughout a calculation, equation, or function.

Constants appear everywhere in mathematics. Some are universal: Pi, Euler's number, and the Golden ratio are mathematical constants that arise naturally across geometry, Calculus, and nature itself. Others are context-specific—the coefficients in a Polynomial, the bounds in an Integral, or the parameters that define a particular system.

The concept of constancy is essential to defining functions, solving equations, and establishing vector spaces. In practical domains, constants often represent physical laws, like the Speed of light in physics or gravitational acceleration on Earth's surface.

Constants can be rational (like 2 or 7/3), irrational (like π), or even abstract symbols whose numerical values don't matter—only their fixed role in a structure. Recognizing which quantities are constant and which are variable is often the first step in building a mathematical model.
