Coordinate system

A coordinate system is a framework for locating points in space using numbers called coordinates. By assigning each location a unique address—whether on a line, plane, or in three dimensions—coordinate systems transform the geometry of space into algebra, letting us calculate distances, angles, and transformations with precision.

The most familiar is the Cartesian coordinate system, named after René Descartes, which uses perpendicular axes (x, y, z) to pinpoint any location. But coordinate systems come in many flavors: Polar coordinates describe points by distance and angle; Spherical coordinates suit problems on Earth or in 3D rendering; Cylindrical coordinates elegantly handle rotating objects.

Coordinate systems are foundational across science. Land surveying relies on them for mapping terrain. Physics uses them to describe motion and fields. Machine learning models embed data in high-dimensional coordinate spaces. In Information visualization, choosing the right coordinate system can make patterns leap off the page.

The beauty of a coordinate system lies in its abstraction: it's a bridge between geometry and computation, between what we see and what we can calculate.
