Culture

Culture is the shared system of identities, beliefs, practices, artifacts, and meanings that groups of people create, inherit, and continuously reshape over time. It emerges from the interplay between spiritual traditions, artistic expressions, culinary practices, inherited knowledge, and built environments. Culture is simultaneously deeply local—rooted in specific watersheds, climates, and histories—and perpetually in motion, flowing across borders through trade, migration, and language.

Unlike a static museum piece, culture is a living process. It encompasses the explicit (holidays, laws, rituals) and the implicit (manners, humor, what counts as "normal"). How people experience their world—what they value, how they organize knowledge, their relationship to resources—all forms culture.

Culture is neither monolithic nor innocent. Communities within the same society may hold differing values. Power shapes what gets preserved, celebrated, or erased. Yet culture also represents humanity's greatest collaborative achievement: the accumulated wisdom, wonder, and imagination of countless generations.
