Deep learning

Deep learning is a branch of Machine Learning inspired by how biological neural systems process information. It uses Artificial Neural Networks with many layers—hence "deep"—to automatically discover the patterns and representations needed for detection or classification from raw input.

Unlike traditional Machine Learning requiring hand-crafted features, deep learning systems learn hierarchical feature representations directly from data. A image might first learn edges, then shapes, then objects across successive layers. This approach has revolutionized fields from Computer Vision to Natural Language Processing.

The technique relies on vast datasets, powerful computers, and sophisticated Optimization algorithms like backpropagation. Breakthroughs like Convolutional Neural Networks and Recurrent Neural Networks enabled practical applications: medical imaging diagnosis, autonomous vehicles, language translation, and generative systems.

Deep learning has become foundational to modern Artificial Intelligence, though debate continues about interpretability, bias, energy consumption, and the path toward Artificial General Intelligence. Researchers worldwide—from universities to tech companies—continue expanding what these systems can achieve.
