Encryption

Encryption is the mathematical transformation of readable information into an unintelligible form, using a key, such that only authorized parties can decrypt it back. It's the foundational tool protecting privacy, security, and trust in digital communication.

Encryption works by applying an algorithm—a set of mathematical rules—to plaintext data. Without the correct key, even powerful computers face nearly impossible computational barriers. Modern encryption underpins everything from banking systems to messaging apps, relying on mathematical problems like factorization that are easy to verify but hard to solve.

Two main families exist: symmetric encryption, where sender and receiver share one secret key (fast but requires secure key exchange), and asymmetric encryption (or public-key cryptography), where a public key encrypts and a private key decrypts (slower but solves the key-sharing problem). RSA and AES are widely deployed standards.

Encryption faces real tensions: it protects human rights and whistleblowers, yet governments argue it hampers law enforcement. The mathematics is sound; the social questions remain contested.
