Fixed point (mathematics)

In various areas of mathematics, a fixed point is a point that is mapped to itself by a function, meaning that the function does not change the point. This concept is crucial in understanding the behavior of functions, particularly in the context of Function composition and Iterative methods. A fixed point can be thought of as a stable state, where the function's output is the same as its input, much like the concept of States of matter in physics. The study of fixed points is essential in Mathematical analysis, Topology, and Dynamical systems. The Brouwer fixed-point theorem and the Banach fixed-point theorem are notable results that guarantee the existence of fixed points under certain conditions. Fixed points also play a role in Numerical analysis, where they are used to solve equations and optimize functions, often relying on Heuristics and biases to guide the search for a solution.
