Gas giants

Gas giants are massive planets composed primarily of gases and liquids, lacking a solid surface. These cosmic behemoths dwarf rocky worlds—Jupiter alone could fit over a thousand Earths inside it. Their immense gravitational fields trap hydrogen, helium, and trace gases in thick, turbulent atmospheres that swirl in bands of stunning color and ferocity.

The four gas giants in our Solar SystemJupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—orbit beyond the inner rocky planets. Jupiter and Saturn are "gas giants" proper, while Uranus and Neptune, richer in water and ices, are sometimes called "ice giants," though both categories remain fluid in astronomical convention.

Gas giants likely formed closer to the Sun then migrated outward through gravitational interactions—a process still being modeled through simulations. Many exoplanets discovered around distant stars are gas giants, suggesting they're common in the Universe. Some orbit their host stars in impossibly close, scorching orbits, challenging our Intuition about planetary formation.

These worlds remain largely mysterious. Their internal structure, magnetic fields, and extreme pressures hint at physics we're still working to understand.
