Geological time

Geological time is the vast chronological framework used to organize Earth's history, spanning roughly 4.54 billion years. Unlike human timescales, it divides our planet's past into hierarchical units—eons, eras, periods, and epochs—based on major changes in rock layers, fossil assemblages, and climatic shifts. This system emerged from stratigraphic observation: the principle that deeper layers are generally older, revealing Earth's story layer by layer.
