Harmonic proportions (music)
Harmonic proportions describe the mathematical ratios between frequencies of sounds that determine consonance and dissonance. When two notes vibrate in simple integer ratios—like 2:1 (an octave), 3:2 (a fifth), or 4:3 (a fourth)—they sound pleasing together. More complex ratios produce rougher, more dissonant intervals.
This principle, formalized by ancient Pythagorean scholars and later refined by Euclid, bridges mathematics and perception. The simplicity of a ratio often correlates with how naturally the ear accepts the interval—a reflection of how human hearing processes periodic vibrations.
Harmonic proportions underpin tuning systems across cultures. In just intonation, all intervals derive from pure frequency ratios. In contrast, equal temperament (the modern standard) sacrifices perfect proportions for chromatic flexibility, distributing the unavoidable "error" evenly across octaves.
Understanding harmonic proportions illuminates why certain chord progressions feel resolved while others create tension—a foundation for composition, harmony, and acoustics.
