Himalayas

The Himalayas are the world's highest mountain range, stretching roughly 1,500 miles across Asia along the borders of India, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, and Pakistan. Formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates around 40 million years ago, they continue to rise at a rate of several centimeters per year—a dramatic example of ongoing geological transformation.

The range contains 10 of the world's 14 peaks above 26,000 feet, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Beyond their superlative height, the Himalayas anchor entire ecosystems, sustaining the food chains and water systems of nearly 2 billion people downstream. The mountains are the source of major rivers including the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Indus.

Culturally and historically, the Himalayas hold profound significance across Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic traditions. They marked territorial boundaries during the Partition of India and remain geopolitically consequential. The region's unique biodiversity—from snow leopards to rare medicinal plants—makes it a hotspot for naturalists and conservationists.

Modern challenges include environmental degradation, climate shifts affecting glaciers, and the tensions between development and preservation.
