Integrated circuits
An integrated circuit (IC) is a miniaturized electronic component in which thousands, millions, or billions of transistors, resistors, and other circuit elements are fabricated together on a single chip of semiconductor material—typically silicon. ICs are the foundational building blocks of modern computing, replacing bulky discrete components and revolutionizing everything from personal computers to smartphones.
Integrated circuits operate by encoding information and logic into patterns of conductive and insulating layers. Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce independently pioneered IC design in the late 1950s, launching an industry that has followed Moore's Law for decades—doubling component density roughly every two years. This explosive miniaturization enables staggering computational power in increasingly compact form.
Different IC types serve distinct purposes: microprocessors execute instructions, memory chips store data, and specialized circuits handle signal processing, power regulation, or analog conversion. Manufacturing requires extraordinary precision, using photolithography and chemical etching to pattern features now measured in nanometers.
The ubiquity of ICs—invisible in nearly every electronic device—represents one of humanity's great collaborative achievements in expertise, protocol, and industrial design.
