Living thing
A living thing is an entity that exhibits the fundamental characteristics of life: the ability to grow, reproduce, respond to environmental stimuli, maintain homeostasis, and metabolize energy. Living things range from single-celled bacteria to vast ecosystems of interdependent organisms.
All known living things are built from cells, share a carbon-based chemistry, and contain encoded instructions—typically DNA—that guide their development and function. They exist within environmental boundaries and depend on flows of energy, whether from the sun or chemical sources deep underground.
The question of what counts as "living" has fascinated thinkers across religious traditions, ancient cultures, and modern science. Viruses occupy a blurry middle ground—they replicate but cannot metabolize alone. Some definitions emphasize the staggering diversity of forms life takes; others focus on the universal processes all living systems share.
Living things interact continuously with their non-living environment, exchanging matter and energy, shaping landscapes through ecological engineering, and collectively generating the biosphere that makes Earth habitable. Understanding what makes something "alive" remains one of humanity's deepest inquiries.
