Mercury

Mercury is the smallest planet in our Solar System and the closest to the Sun. A world of extremes, it races through space faster than any other planet—hence its name, borrowed from the Roman messenger god. Its surface is a cratered, barren landscape baked by solar radiation on the day side while plunging to frigid darkness on the night side, since Mercury rotates very slowly and lacks a substantial atmosphere to distribute heat. Yet this harsh world fascinates astronomers: its unusual orbit helped confirm Einstein's theory of relativity, and its composition—a large iron core wrapped in a thin rocky mantle—remains mysterious. Cosmic Rays bombard its airless surface, creating a dynamic electromagnetic environment. Recent missions have revealed water ice hiding in permanently shadowed craters near the poles, suggesting Mercury holds secrets about the early Solar System. It remains one of the least explored planets, visited only by a handful of spacecraft.
