Natural selection

The process by which organisms better suited to their environment tend to survive and reproduce more successfully than others, gradually shaping the traits of populations over time. This is the primary mechanism of evolution, discovered independently by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the 19th century.

Natural selection operates through a simple logic: Variation exists within populations; individuals with advantageous traits are more likely to survive to reproduce; these beneficial traits accumulate across generations. A classic example is Peppered moths darkening in industrial regions where soot blackened tree bark—the darker variants had better Camouflage and survived predation more often.

The concept fundamentally changed how we understand life. It requires no designer, no plan: just habitats, Competition, and time. Mutation provides raw variation, while environmental pressures act as a sieve. Over millions of years, this process sculpts exquisite complexity—from the eye's focusing lens to the Immune system's antibody diversity.

Natural selection is not purposeful and not all-powerful. Genetic drift, Gene flow, and Contingency also shape evolution. It cannot predict the future, only favor what works now. Yet its explanatory power spans biology entirely, unifying Paleontology, Genetics, Microbiology, and Ecology.
