Parent material is the rock or mineral-rich deposit from which Soil develops over time. Through Weathering, physical breakdown, and Chemical Reactions, parent material transforms into the foundation of all terrestrial ecosystems—a process spanning centuries to millennia.

Parent material determines a soil's basic chemistry, texture, and fertility.
