Particle Physics

Particle physics is the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces that govern their interactions. It explores what the universe is made of at the smallest scales—below atoms, below nuclei—and how these elementary particles behave, collide, and transform.

The field emerged in the early 20th century alongside quantum mechanics, revealing that reality at tiny scales obeys utterly different rules than our everyday experience suggests. Particles like electrons, quarks, and photons can exist in superposition, tunnel through barriers, and entangle across space. Physicists use massive particle accelerators—machines that smash particles together at near-light speeds—to glimpse particles that existed only in the universe's first moments after the Big Bang.

A major triumph is the Standard Model, a mathematical framework organizing known particles into families and describing three of the four fundamental forces: electromagnetism, and the weak and strong nuclear forces. Yet mysteries remain: what is dark matter? Why does mass exist? Can we unify gravity with quantum mechanics?

Particle physics is both deeply abstract—rooted in symmetry and observation—and intensely practical, yielding technologies from medical imaging to materials science.
