Periodic Table

The periodic table is a systematic arrangement of all known chemical elements organized by Atomic number and recurring patterns of chemical behavior. Dmitri Mendeleev created the first widely-adopted version in 1869, famously leaving gaps for undiscovered elements—a bold prediction later vindicated by experiment.

Each element occupies a cell displaying its symbol, atomic number, and atomic mass. Elements in the same vertical column, called a group, share similar chemical properties because they have the same number of electrons in their outer shell. Horizontal rows, or periods, represent elements with the same number of electron shells.

The table reveals deep truths about matter itself: why Sodium reacts violently with water, why noble gases are inert, why Iron rusts. It bridges particle physics and everyday chemistry, showing how nature's fundamental building blocks organize themselves into infinite complexity.

The periodic table remains one of science's greatest problem-solving tools, enabling chemists to predict unknown elements' properties and predict novel compounds.
