Photon

A photon is the fundamental particle of light and all other forms of electromagnetic radiation. Massless yet energetic, photons carry momentum and can behave as both particles and waves—a duality that stumped physicists for centuries and remains central to quantum mechanics.

Photons are produced whenever charged particles accelerate, such as electrons dropping between energy levels in atoms. Their energy depends on their frequency: high-frequency photons (like X-rays) pack more punch than low-frequency ones (like radio waves). This relationship, E = hf, where h is Planck's constant, was Einstein's insight that earned him the Nobel Prize.

In nature, photons drive photosynthesis, enabling plants to convert sunlight into chemical energy. They travel at the speed of light—the universe's ultimate speed limit—and can be detected individually by sensitive instruments, revealing the granular texture of reality itself.

Understanding photons unlocked modern technology: lasers, solar cells, microscopy, and quantum computing all depend on controlling and measuring these elusive particles. They're both utterly ordinary—photons fill the space around you—and profoundly strange.
