Pickleball

Pickleball is a racquet sport played on a court smaller than tennis, using solid paddles and a perforated plastic ball. Invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, it combines elements of Badminton, Tennis, and Jai alai, creating an accessible game that emphasizes Hand-Eye Coordination and strategic Movement.

The sport's defining feature is the "kitchen"—a no-volley zone near the net—which encourages longer rallies and reduces power-based dominance. Players stand closer together than in tennis, making it ideal for players of varying ages and fitness levels. A standard match uses two or four players on a court roughly one-third the size of a tennis court.

Pickleball has experienced explosive growth since the 2000s, becoming the fastest-growing sport in the United States. It thrives in community centers, retirement communities, and dedicated facilities, partly due to lower injury risk and shorter learning curves compared to tennis.

The name's origin remains delightfully disputed—some attribute it to a family dog, others to a pickling barrel. Standardized by the International Federation of Pickleball (IFP), the sport now hosts professional tournaments and has developed a rich culture of competitive play and recreational enjoyment.
