Precision

Precision is the quality of being exact, consistent, and reproducible—the degree to which measurements, expressions, or actions align with a target or repeat identically. It differs from accuracy, which measures closeness to truth; precision measures repeatability. A clock might be very precise (always wrong by exactly 3 minutes) yet inaccurate.

Precision matters everywhere. In Surveying, it determines whether boundaries align. In sports like Racquetball or Jai alai, it's the difference between victory and defeat. GPT models require precision in parameter assignment. Particle physics demands extraordinary precision—errors cascade through models. Historical events hinge on precise documentation; Irrigation systems fail without precise engineering.

Computer memory trades precision for speed. Git version control preserves precision in code. Even ecosystemsfood chains, lunar cycles, tidal patterns—operate with biological precision refined over millennia.

The cost of precision rises steeply: more decimal places require more effort, better instruments, longer computation. Wisdom lies in choosing the right precision for the task—excessive precision wastes resources; insufficient precision invites failure.
