Probability
Probability is the mathematical study of quantifying how likely an event is to occur, expressed as a number between 0 and 1. It bridges how we know things about an uncertain world and enables Ethical decision-making under risk. From weather forecasts to medical diagnoses, probability shapes how we reason about the future.
At its heart lies the question: when we cannot predict a single outcome with certainty, what can we say? Probability answers by measuring frequency—either how often something happens in repeated trials, or how confident we are in a claim given available evidence. This duality reflects two major philosophical traditions: Bayesian approaches (belief-based) and frequentist approaches (observation-based).
Probability emerged from 17th-century gamblers' questions and grew into a rigorous framework underlying Statistics, quantum mechanics, and artificial intelligence. It lets us act wisely despite uncertainty: insurers price risk, engineers design safe systems, and scientists test hypotheses.
The field reveals something profound: randomness isn't chaos. Beneath apparent disorder lie patterns—generalizable laws that emerge when we look at many instances together. Probability is the language of that hidden order.
