Proof

Proof is a demonstration that something is true, certain, or valid—but the nature of that demonstration varies radically across human endeavor. In mathematics, proof means a logical argument deriving conclusions from axioms. In theoretical physics, it involves reproducible observations and predictive models. In law, proof hinges on evidence meeting a specified standard. In everyday life, proof can mean anything from personal experience to social consensus. Each domain has developed its own rigorous (or relaxed) standards for what counts as convincing.

The tension between these definitions reveals something profound: proof isn't a thing we discover but a social agreement about what reasoning we'll accept. A mathematical proof satisfies absolutely; a scientific proof persists until overturned; a legal proof depends on context and burden. Even in Dialogue, we're constantly negotiating what would constitute proof to the other person.

What makes proof powerful is repeatability and precision—the ability for others to follow the same path and reach the same conclusion. This is why Scientific software and formal notation matter: they let us strip away ambiguity and share reasoning across time and culture.
