Scale (Measurement) (ordinal scale)
An ordinal scale is a measurement system where data points are ranked in order, but the intervals between them are meaningless or unknown. Unlike standardized units, ordinal scales only tell us "more" or "less," "better" or "worse"—not by how much.
Common examples include customer satisfaction ratings (poor, fair, good, excellent), educational letter grades, or military ranks. The key insight: you can say that "good" beats "fair," but you cannot claim that the jump from "fair" to "good" equals the jump from "good" to "excellent."
Ordinal scales sit between nominal scales, which merely label categories, and interval scales, which assume equal distances. This middle ground makes them useful for surveys and rankings while avoiding false precision—a crucial distinction in Science and statistics.
Ordinal data cannot be averaged meaningfully, though you can find the median or mode. They're fundamental to adaptive management, opinion polling, and anywhere humans rank preferences without measuring exact differences. Understanding ordinal constraints prevents scientists from committing the sin of treating "medium stress" as exactly halfway between "low" and "high."
