Schrödinger's Cat
Schrödinger's Cat is a famous thought experiment illustrating the paradoxes of Quantum Mechanics when applied to everyday objects. Devised by physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935, it describes a sealed box containing a cat, a radioactive atom, a hammer, and a vial of poison. If the atom decays, it triggers the hammer to break the vial, killing the cat. According to Quantum Mechanics, the atom exists in Superposition (quantum mechanics) until measured—both decayed and undecayed simultaneously. This means the cat is theoretically both alive and dead until someone opens the box.
The thought experiment reveals how absurd it seems to apply quantum rules to macroscopic objects. While atoms genuinely exist in superposition, cats clearly do not. The paradox highlights the measurement problem: what counts as "observation" in Quantum Mechanics? Does consciousness collapse the wave function? Do only sophisticated detectors count?
Schrödinger intended this as reductio ad absurdum—proof that quantum mechanics needs careful interpretation when scaling up. The experiment became cultural shorthand for uncertainty, contradiction, and the strangeness lurking at reality's foundations.
