Spacetime
Spacetime is the four-dimensional continuum combining three dimensions of space with one dimension of time into a single unified fabric. In classical physics, space and time were treated as separate, absolute entities. But Special relativity and General relativity, developed by Albert Einstein, revealed they are interwoven: the motion of massive objects and the strength of gravity actually bend and warp spacetime itself.
In General relativity, massive objects curve the spacetime around them, and this curvature is what we experience as gravitational attraction. Time runs slower near massive objects and in stronger gravitational fields—a phenomenon confirmed by countless experiments. Black holes represent spacetime's most extreme warping: regions so dense that spacetime folds inward, trapping even light.
Spacetime dissolves the ancient divide between the static and the moving. Every event—every particle interaction, every heartbeat—occupies a unique location in this four-dimensional stage. Understanding spacetime transformed our conception of the cosmos, from planetary orbits to the fate of the universe itself.
