Spatial reasoning

Spatial reasoning is the cognitive ability to understand, manipulate, and navigate the relationships between objects and spaces. It involves mentally rotating forms, visualizing three-dimensional structures from two-dimensional representations, and comprehending how objects fit together or move through environments.

This faculty emerges early in human development and varies widely across individuals. Some people excel at mentally constructing structures or predicting how objects will behave when transformed—skills crucial for Architecture, engineering, and surgery. Recent neuroscience reveals that spatial cognition recruits distinct brain regions and can be trained at any age.
