Stellar classification

Stellar classification is the system astronomers use to organize stars by their physical properties, creating a cosmic taxonomy that reveals how stars are born, live, and die.

The most widely used system is the Harvard Spectral Classification, which sorts stars by surface temperature and composition using letter designations: O, B, A, F, G, K, M (from hottest to coolest). Our Sun is a G-type star. Each letter subdivides into ten numerical grades, allowing precise categorization of the billions of stars visible from Earth.

Classification combines spectroscopy—analyzing light signatures—with mathematical analysis of brightness and distance. The resulting data reveals stellar mass, age, and evolutionary stage. A star's position on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, which plots luminosity against temperature, shows whether it's a main-sequence star like our Sun, a red giant, or a white dwarf.

This system transformed astronomy from mere observation into predictive science. It demonstrated that all stars follow similar lifecycles, governed by fundamental forces, and that our galactic home contains stars in every conceivable stage of existence.
