Supply Chain

A supply chain is the entire network of organizations, people, and processes that move a product or service from raw materials to the end consumer. It encompasses sourcing, manufacturing, distribution, and delivery—each link in a sequence designed to create value while managing costs, quality, and timing.

Modern supply chains are marvels of coordination, involving suppliers across continents, real-time tracking systems, and intricate scheduling. They balance risk mitigation against efficiency, accounting for unpredictable disruptions like weather, geopolitics, or pandemic shocks.

Supply chains reveal hidden interdependencies in our world. A smartphone supply chain might touch agriculture (for packaging materials), mining (for rare metals), semiconductor factories in multiple countries, and retail networks. Understanding them exposes how economic systems actually function.

The field has evolved from simple linear models to complex, adaptive networks using mathematical optimization, layered inventory strategies, and increasingly, sustainable material science. Modern challenges include reshoring, carbon footprint reduction, and resilience against single-point failures.
