Suspension of disbelief
Suspension of disbelief is a concept in Storytelling, Film theory, and Drama where the audience temporarily sets aside their critical faculties to engage with a narrative, despite its implausibilities or inconsistencies. This phenomenon is closely related to Cognitive bias, particularly Bounded rationality, as it involves a willingness to overlook flaws in the narrative in order to maintain Emotional investment. The concept is often discussed in the context of Science fiction and Fantasy, where authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and Isaac Asimov have explored the boundaries of suspension of disbelief. It is also relevant to Neurobiology and Psychology, as it involves the interplay between Cognition and Emotion.
