Turing test
A thought experiment proposed by Alan Turing in 1950 that asks: can a machine be considered intelligent if a human evaluator cannot distinguish its responses from those of another human through text-based conversation alone?
Turing framed the question in his seminal paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," shifting focus from philosophical debates about machine consciousness to practical behavioral criteria. An interrogator chats with two hidden entities—one human, one machine—and must guess which is which. If the evaluator cannot reliably tell them apart, the machine passes the test and demonstrates artificial intelligence.
The test remains profoundly influential despite its limitations. Critics note it measures conversational mimicry rather than genuine understanding, and that manipulating human psychology isn't equivalent to reasoning or cognition. Modern Large Language Models can fool evaluators in brief exchanges, yet their underlying mathematical structures lack genuine comprehension.
The test has become a cultural touchstone—a shorthand for the question "When is a machine truly intelligent?" It inspired decades of chatbot research, from ELIZA to contemporary systems, and shapes how we think about Thoughts, consciousness, and the boundary between simulation and reality.
