Volume (geometry)
Volume is the measure of three-dimensional space occupied by a solid object, expressed in cubic units. It represents how much "stuff" an object contains or how much space it takes up.
For basic polyhedra, volume is calculated through formulas: a Cube with side length s has volume s³, while a Sphere of radius r has volume (4/3)πr³. Cylinders and cones follow proportional logic based on their base area and height.
Volume is fundamental to calculus and geometric transformation. The ancient mathematician Archimedes famously calculated volumes of complex shapes by imagining them as infinitesimal slices—a proto-integration technique. Modern Computer graphics relies on volumetric rendering to display three-dimensional scenes convincingly.
Beyond abstract mathematics, volume matters everywhere: in engineering (tank capacity), cooking (recipe measurements), architecture (interior space), and material science (density calculations). The concept bridges pure geometry with practical physics, making it one of geometry's most universally applied ideas.
