Addition

Addition is one of the four basic arithmetic operations, alongside Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division. It combines two or more numbers—called addends—into a single sum. Written as a + b = c, addition asks: "What do you get when you put these quantities together?"

Humans have performed addition for millennia, likely emerging from practical needs like counting livestock or measuring grain. Ancient mathematicians developed increasingly abstract notations and methods, eventually codifying the commutative and associative properties that make addition predictable and elegant.

Addition extends far beyond whole numbers. You can add vectors, Complex numbers, and even functions. In abstract algebra, addition becomes a formal operation on any set with certain properties. Computers represent addition at the hardware level using Logic gates, making it foundational to all digital computation.
