Anthropocene
The Anthropocene is a proposed geological epoch defined by humanity's overwhelming impact on Earth's physical systems. Rather than marking time by layers of rock, this era is characterized by the fingerprints we've left: radioactive isotopes from nuclear testing, Plastic pollution in every ocean, altered atmospheric chemistry, and reshaped ecosystems.
The term emerged in the early 2000s when geologists noticed something unprecedented—humans had become a geological force. We've accelerated chemical reactions in the air, diverted water resources, and driven species toward extinction faster than continental processes reshape continents.
Dates matter here. Some scholars anchor the Anthropocene to the Industrial Revolution around 1800, when agriculture and industry began reshaping waterways and air. Others point to 1945, when nuclear fallout left a permanent mark. Still others propose the 1950s "Great Acceleration," when human activity explosively multiplied.
Yet the Anthropocene isn't simply a cautionary tale—it's an invitation. Recognizing our planet-scale influence opens questions about responsibility, intention, and what comes next. Some envision the Anthropocene as humanity's awakening to stewardship.
