Atmosphere (planetary)
A planetary atmosphere is the layer of gases held to a planet by gravity, forming a dynamic envelope that mediates between space and surface. It's both shield and messenger: filtering stellar radiation, enabling weather and climate, and carrying chemical signatures that reveal a world's history.
Atmospheres vary wildly. Earth's oxygen-rich blanket—a product of the Great Oxidation Event—sustains life and regulates temperature through greenhouse gases. Venus suffocates under crushing clouds of sulfuric acid. Mars clutches only whispers of carbon dioxide. Some moons have atmospheres so thin they're barely there; others, like Titan, rival planets in density and complexity.
The composition, pressure, and circulation of a planetary atmosphere tell stories: about deep time, planetary formation, and whether a world can harbor life. Ions dance in upper layers; winds spiral at the surface. An atmosphere is never static—it breathes, it changes, it connects.
