Arthropods are invertebrate animals characterized by jointed legs, segmented bodies, and a tough external skeleton called an exoskeleton. They represent Earth's most successful animal phylum by sheer diversity—over a million described species and likely millions more undiscovered. From microscopic mites to massive crabs, arthropods inhabit nearly every geographic zone: polar ice, oceans, rainforests, and your own home.
The group includes insects, arachnids (spiders, scorpions), crustaceans, and centipedes. Their jointed limbs and segmented structure grant extraordinary versatility in movement and adaptation. Many arthropods are crucial to food webs, pollinating plants via their attraction to nectar, or serving as primary consumers. Their exoskeletons periodically shed during molting, allowing growth.
Arthropods display remarkable sensory abilities—compound eyes, antennae detecting chemical signals, and neural systems enabling complex behaviors from social insects' cooperation to hunting strategies. Aquatic species evolved specialized organs for saltwater existence, while terrestrial arthropods developed breathing systems suited to air.
Their evolutionary success spans over 500 million years, making them integral to nearly every ecosystem on Earth.
