Atomic structure

Atomic structure describes the arrangement of subatomic particles within an Atom, the fundamental building block of all Materials. At its heart lies a dense Nucleus of protons and neutrons, orbited by electrons in regions called orbitals.

The nucleus is extraordinarily tiny yet contains most of an atom's mass. Protons carry positive charge; neutrons are neutral. Electrons, vastly smaller and negatively charged, occupy clouds of probability rather than fixed paths—a quantum mechanical truth that revolutionized Physics.

The number of protons defines an Element: hydrogen has one, oxygen eight, gold seventy-nine. Electrons equal protons in neutral atoms, determining an element's chemical behavior. Atoms with mismatched electrons or nuclei become ions or radioactive.

Understanding atomic structure unlocked the periodic table, Nuclear fission, and Electromagnetism. It explains why materials conduct heat and light, why atoms bond into molecules, and why chemistry itself exists. This scale—roughly a billionth of a meter—remains one of nature's most elegant and consequential layers of organization.
