Base (geometry) (cylinder)
In geometry, the base of a cylinder refers to one of its two parallel, congruent circular faces. These circular regions form the top and bottom boundaries of the solid, perpendicular to the cylinder's central axis.
The base is fundamental to calculating a cylinder's volume and surface area. Volume is determined by multiplying the area of the base (πr², where r is the radius) by the cylinder's height. The base's radius also determines the cylinder's lateral surface area when combined with height measurements.
In practical contexts—from engineering pipes to storage containers—identifying the base helps orient the cylinder and determine load-bearing capacity. The base serves as the reference surface for measuring height and understanding how the solid extends in space.
Unlike the bases of polyhedra, which are polygonal, a cylinder's base is always circular. This distinction matters in Parametric design and computational geometry, where different shape properties require distinct formulas and approaches.
The concept extends to more complex solids: cones, frustums, and truncated shapes all employ "base" language, though their bases may differ in shape or number.
