Base (geometry) (polyhedron)
The base of a polyhedron is the face or faces chosen as a reference point for describing the solid's structure, orientation, or volume.
In most contexts, the base is the face on which a polyhedron is thought to "rest" or "stand." For pyramids, the base is the polygonal foundation from which triangular faces converge to an apex. For prisms, the base refers to either of the two parallel congruent faces. In both cases, the height is measured perpendicular from the base to the opposite face or vertex.
The choice of base can be somewhat arbitrary—any face of certain polyhedra (like cubes) might serve as a base depending on orientation. However, the base is essential for calculating volume: the formula V = (base area) × height works regardless of which face you designate, as long as height is measured perpendicular to it.
The concept extends naturally to polytopes in higher dimensions, where a base remains a fundamental reference for spatial reasoning and computational geometry. Understanding bases is crucial in scale, design, and architectural visualization.
