Elements (chemistry)
Chemical elements are the fundamental building blocks of all Matter — pure substances made of a single type of Atom. Each element is defined by its atomic number, the count of protons in its nucleus, which determines its chemical identity and behavior.
There are 118 known elements, ranging from Hydrogen (the simplest and most abundant) to synthetically created superheavy elements. They're organized in the Periodic Table, a masterwork of organization that reveals deep patterns: elements in the same column share similar Chemical properties, while their position reflects electron configuration and Reaction rates.
Elements combine to form compounds, the vast majority of materials we encounter. Oxygen, Carbon, Nitrogen, and Hydrogen form the chemistry of life itself. Metals like Iron and Copper conduct electricity; noble gases like Neon remain chemically inert; halogens like Chlorine eagerly bond with others.
Understanding elements unlocked modern chemistry — from Lavoisier's revolutionary work naming them systematically to Mendeleev's prediction of undiscovered elements through periodic patterns. Today, element synthesis pushes the boundaries of Nuclear physics, creating fleeting superheavy isotopes that barely exist before decaying.
