Food Webs

A food web is the interconnected diagram of who eats whom in an Ecosystem. Unlike a simpler food chain (grass → rabbit → fox), a food web captures the reality that most organisms consume multiple food sources and are eaten by several predators. It reveals the flow of Energy through living communities, showing how Plants convert sunlight, herbivores consume plants, carnivores hunt herbivores, and decomposers break down the dead—all in a tangled, dynamic network.

Food webs are central to understanding Ecology because they expose ecological fragility: remove one species (say, bees pollinating crucial crops), and shock waves ripple through the entire system. They illustrate Natural selection in action—predator-prey relationships that shape evolution. Marine food webs, terrestrial webs, and those in extreme environments all follow this principle, though their complexity varies wildly.

By mapping these relationships, ecologists predict how Ecosystems respond to environmental change, species loss, or human intervention. Food webs aren't static; they shift with seasons, migrations, and climate shifts.
