Fungi
Fungi are a kingdom of organisms that decompose organic matter and form some of nature's most intricate underground partnerships. Neither plant nor animal, they digest food externally by secreting enzymes, then absorb the nutrients—a strategy that makes them master recyclers of dead wood, leaf litter, and soil.
Fungal bodies consist of thread-like structures called hyphae, which weave into dense networks (mycelium) that can span acres underground. Some fungi fruit visibly as mushrooms, toadstools, or puffballs; others remain invisible. They include the mold on bread, the yeast in beer and bread dough, and the genetic powerhouses of laboratory science.
Fungi form critical relationships with plants: many species partner with tree roots in Underground partnerships called mycorrhizae, trading mineral nutrients for sugars. This ancient collaboration shaped how forests grow. Others parasitize plants or animals, some harmfully, others beneficially. A few produce compounds used in medicine—most famously, penicillin.
In human culture, fungi inspire wonder and caution alike. Some are edible delicacies; others are deadly poisons. They've been central to food traditions and fermentation for millennia, and they're now recognized as crucial to soil health and Sustainable development.
