GLONASS
GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is Russia's satellite-based positioning and navigation network, operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces. Launched in phases beginning 1982, it mirrors the American GPS constellation, providing real-time location, velocity, and time data to users worldwide.
The system comprises roughly 24 satellites orbiting Earth in three inclined planes, offering continuous global coverage. Unlike GPS's ground stations concentrated in specific regions, GLONASS ground control is distributed across Russian territory, giving Russia independent positioning capability. This Independence from foreign systems proved strategically valuable during geopolitical tensions.
GLONASS achieves comparable Precision to GPS—around 5–10 meters for civilian use—though it has historically suffered from less consistent satellite availability. Modern receivers often integrate both GLONASS and GPS signals for improved Accuracy, especially in urban canyons or obscured environments where one system alone falters.
The system operates at different radio frequencies than GPS, requiring dual-capable receivers. Modernization efforts continue, with newer GLONASS-K satellites offering enhanced capabilities. Though less commercially dominant than GPS, GLONASS remains critical for Russian independence in Surveying, Modeling, and autonomous systems.
