Gene

A gene is a discrete unit of hereditary information encoded in DNA that typically specifies the instructions for producing a single Protein or functional RNA molecule. Genes are the fundamental building blocks of genomes, passed from parents to offspring and responsible for inherited traits across all living organisms.

Genes work by being transcribed into messenger RNA, which is then translated into proteins that perform most cellular functions.
