Higgs boson

The Higgs boson is an elementary particle discovered in 2012 at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, confirming decades of theoretical prediction. It is the quantum excitation of the Higgs field, an invisible energy field permeating all space that gives other particles their mass through a process called electroweak symmetry breaking.

Before the Higgs boson's discovery, the Standard Model of particle physics had a profound gap: it couldn't explain why particles have mass. The Higgs mechanism, proposed by Peter Higgs and others in the 1960s, solved this puzzle by suggesting that particles acquire mass by interacting with the omnipresent Higgs field—the stronger the interaction, the greater the mass.

The discovery required extraordinary measurement precision: the Higgs decays almost instantly into other particles, so physicists had to reconstruct its existence from resonance patterns in collision data. This triumph of both theory and experimental ingenuity fundamentally validated our understanding of how the universe works at its smallest scales.

The Higgs boson remains an active frontier in physics, with researchers investigating its properties and whether additional Higgs-like particles exist.
